Urban Teachers is committed to placing participants in high-need urban schools. During the residency year, the Site Team works to match participants to school partners based on several criteria, including school partner needs, participant experience, and if possible, participant preferences. While participants’ preferences are ideally considered, Urban Teachers cannot guarantee placement in a specific grade level, content area, school site, or district. The Urban Teachers Site Team works to provide notification of school placement by the conclusion of the Summer Institute.
Urban Teachers requires participants to make a four-year (4) commitment to the program and, when possible, to their school. For most, the years as a teacher of record are completed at the same school as the residency year. In other instances, however, due to a variety of circumstances, a participant’s placement for the fellow years may be in a different school from the residency year placement school.
Participants who are dismissed by or resign from their school placement during the school year will be eligible for automatic dismissal from the Urban Teachers program. If a participant is not hired or rehired by their school placement for the following school year through no fault of the participant and is otherwise in good standing with Urban Teachers’ performance expectations and program requirements, Urban Teachers will make reasonable efforts to help them secure a new placement at a partner school. If despite such efforts, the participant still is unable to secure an approved placement at a partner school by the start of the next school year, the participant will be automatically dismissed from the program. In some districts, an unsatisfactory evaluation or a principal’s decision to not renew a teacher’s contract makes the teacher ineligible to teach anywhere in that district. Such cases typically result in dismissal from the program.
SCHOOL PLACEMENT TRANSFER
All school placement or hiring decisions must be approved by the Site Team. Participants who leave their placement site and seek employment at another school site without written approval from their site Executive Director or Assistant Director are subject to automatic dismissal from the Urban Teachers program. If a participant’s safety is at risk or compromised, if they are required to participate in improper activities at the school site, or if they are consistently unable to complete Urban Teachers’ program requirements related to coursework or coaching in their school placement, the participant should contact their designated site Assistant Director immediately. In other extreme circumstances, a participant may submit a placement transfer request to Urban Teachers for the coming school year. Urban Teachers will only support school placement transfers in accordance with district/CMO policies and requirements and the Urban Teachers placement transfer request process. Participants should contact their site Assistant Director for information about this process.
Urban Teachers retains sole and absolute discretion regarding whether to approve a change of placement request. Changes of placement should be the exception and not the rule, and, accordingly, Urban Teachers has generally only granted changes of placement in extraordinary circumstances and where it is in accordance with district/CMO policies and requirements. For example, and without limitation, Urban Teachers may approve a placement transfer if the participant’s health or safety will be at risk or compromised in their current placement or the participant’s current placement will make it objectively impossible for the participant to complete Urban Teachers program requirements related to coursework or coaching.
