Applicants with a current or prior teacher license (or certification), conditional or otherwise, must disclose this on the application. Applicants must also disclose if they participated in a teacher preparation program (either in a school of education program or through an alternative teacher preparation program) leading to licensure, whether or not they ultimately received their license.
Regardless of teacher licensure status, all Urban Teachers participants will be required to complete the entirety of the program of study and be held to the same accountability standards. We do not allow prior credits or clinical experiences to count towards program completion. Depending on prior licensure(s), you may be limited in which city you can be placed.
Urban Teachers can admit applicants who have full-time teaching experience (less than 2 years) OR are certified. Individuals with three or more years of full-time teaching experience and certification (currently OR in the past) are not eligible for the Urban Teachers program. Student teaching and teaching abroad are allowed and not considered full-time teaching experiences. If you are earning, or previously obtained a provisional or teacher's license from the same state in which you want to work (DC, Maryland, Philadelphia or Texas), you may not be eligible to continue with Urban Teachers in that particular state. You may consider the other city options available in our program.
Urban Teachers is a teacher preparation program for aspiring and novice teachers. We are happy to talk through your options based on your individual circumstances. Questions? Please email admissions@urbanteachers.org.
